The Mass Save heat pump rebate is a Massachusetts state program that pays homeowners and renters to replace gas, oil, or electric resistance heating with high-efficiency heat pumps. It's administered through electric utilities — Eversource, National Grid, Cape Light Compact, and Unitil — and funded through a charge on all electricity ratepayers.
In 2026, after the expiration of the federal 25C tax credit in December 2025, the Mass Save rebate is now the primary financial incentive for heat pump installations in Massachusetts.

Equipment Requirements
Cold-Climate Heat Pump (ccASHP)
Mass Save requires a cold-climate certified heat pump — a unit rated to operate efficiently down to -15°F. Most Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Bosch, and Carrier heat pumps qualify. As of 2026, Mass Save requires a low-GWP refrigerant such as R-32 or R-454B; R-410A units are no longer eligible.
Sizing
A Mass Save Home Energy Assessment is required before installation. The assessment determines the correct system size (tons). Standard rebate: $2,650 per ton for whole-home, up to $8,500. A 3-ton system earns $7,950 before the +$500 sizing bonus.

Q: Can renters get the rebate?
Renters cannot receive the heat pump installation rebate — it goes to the property owner. However, renters qualify for LIHEAP fuel assistance, MOR-EV rebate, and Community Solar savings.

The federal 25C residential energy credit expired December 31, 2025 and was not renewed. As of 2026, Mass Save rebates are the primary incentive. No federal credit available.
